Writer Guidelines

MENSBOOK JOURNAL is published quarterly and dedicated to informing and entertaining bright gay men who crave something different from gay media. With a wide diversity of content, our publication is a guy's magazine for gay men. We come to our readers in the form of a pdf book, but our style is best described as a hybrid between a magazine and journal—combining an engaging writing style with occasional scholarly rigor. We seek lifestyle stories about interesting single gay men and gay couples and are interested in publishing inspirational stories; e.g., stories of courage, determination, stamina; come-backs; men who have faced the odds and triumphed. We like to visit successful men in their work, at play, and in their home lives. We publish thoughtful criticism on books, media, sports, politics, social issues, music, the environment. We are interested in publishing short story fiction.

We welcome ideas and articles that reflect clear and innovative thinking and reporting along with outstanding jargon-free writing.

Submitting an Idea or Article

Send a simple one or two paragraph query by email. We are a web-based company and do not deal with paper.

The proposal should succinctly address the following:

• Proposed Title. As a matter of style, we try to begin article titles with an action verb (e.g., creating, changing, choosing, etc.) Our team will craft the final title.
• Stating your main message. If readers retain only one thing from your article, what do you want that to be? Or put another way, if we asked someone to describe your article a week after reading it, what would you like him or her to say?
• Why is your message important or interesting to our audience? This is that quintessential editorial question, “So what?” Why would a busy man read your article? What does it offer him? What is new, counterintuitive, or innovative about your message?
• What is your source of information? (E.g., a study, personal experience, etc.)

If you've already written you article, send it along. All articles should be submitted in MSWord (.doc) ** not .docx ** documents as attachments. If this is not possible, please let us know and we will work with you.

Policies

We do our best to make decisions on submissions within one month. We respond to queries within a week. Since our lead time to publication a few months, articles should not be so time-bound that they will become quickly dated.

Initial acceptance of a proposal or manuscript does not guarantee publication. After initial acceptance, authors and editors may work closely on multiple revisions. Some articles will be published online and not in our printed journal.

We accept and warmly encourage queries and stories from unpublished authors.

Compensation for writing will be discussed at the time of assignment or article acceptance.

Style

  • The best articles and stories are engaging and tell stories succinctly from beginning to the end. Non-fiction pieces should draw upon anecdotes and stories to illustrate key concepts and/or theoretical points. We hold clarity, conciseness, and the absence of gay or conventional jargon in high esteem.
  • Photos and illustrations are welcome and, in many instances, required. They should add to the text as well as be understandable on their own. Following initial acceptance, we will work with you to revise and/or create graphics to fit our format.

Please include your full contact information.
